I bought Chak De! India a few years after it was released and absolutely love it as one of my all-time favorites of any nation. I have been watching every variety of film for 65 years. So yes, this film is very similar to Kurt Russell's movie: Miracle. However, this in no way invalidates what the women's India team that won the 2002 Women World Hockey Championship experienced. The only sport that my family followed was golf and every golfing film made tells the same story that was told in Miracle and Chak de! India: the underdogs are a rag-tag bunch of undisciplined athletes (for whatever reason) who need to be brought together into symphonic harmony to succeed in winning.
Point A-to-Point B is a long, tough, winding journey in everyone because the underdogs in this story do not fight among each other as women from one nation, but from separate countries that happen to be called 'States' by the India Government, They are as different in their ways, attitudes, and customs as India and Pakistan (although they were ALL India nationals for several thousand years until summer 1947). The film is a metaphor of far larger issues than these women of 2002 winning a sports contest, which it was a run-away sensation when it was released. As anyone of Indian origin how s/he felt about it.
The basic issues are of WOMEN being unsupported by the National Committee that cared not the least because “these GIRLSs could not win against a regular (male) hockey team” and being coached by a very famous ‘TRAITOR’ to the country takes the film in heart and drama way beyond the typical sports film. This is about sexual equality, recognition, and validation at the possible cost of winning. It is about national identity of a patriot, rather than a traitor, and about national / racial prejudice. And about how intelligent people can be so self-serving that they outrank others on the stupidity scale: I’m looking at you, Bindia! Definitely wasn't sure you could be saved from yourself. Thank God for the script writers!
Shahrukh Khan is my favorite Indian actor, although I stopped buying his films in 20011 and stopped watching them a year later. I have all of others from his beginning and even his TV show. When he seemed to quit challenging himself and made films to repeatedly portray versions of Raj or Rahul, it hurt my heart for him, his family, and his audience. He’ll still make tons of money, yet where is SRK? How can someone as gifted as he is stop pushing the limits of his talent? He is a theatrically trained actor whose characterizations of heroes, villains, and everything in between have won him praise, awards, fame, fortune, and love. He never played safe before 2011.
As an American who loves all things about films from the US and other countries, it feels is a great loss. Perhaps in the next eight years before he turns sixty he will understand Amitabh Bachchan’s wisdom of playing his age sooner than later. Movie making is still fun for Big B!
In spite of my issues with Sharukh’s film roles this decade, I love Chak de! India as #2 after Swades, which I believe was his best. Please watch them booth for heartfelt, powerful, yet subtle journeys of two very different, quiet men who find peace in very different stories. Swades is longer and extremely engaging. The photography, scenery, and music are gorgeous. Mohan is a world away in every way from Kabir Khan, yet still as wise and thoughtful in his knowledge. Both characters film like people who inhabit our world, rather than those who always belong to a film. Wonderful India classics!

The team is a rag-tag bunch of girls with their own agenda. A bunch of girls who have forgotten what it is like to play for the love of the game. Of playing because you want glory for your country. Not because you want a pensioned job or a government flat. They have all forgotten the sharp thrill of just holding the hockey stick, keeping their eyes on the ball and playing for all they are worth. They have played every game but hockey to make sure they get selected every year in the Indian National team. But what does it really mean to play for the Indian National team? To play for India?
The girls have never known the thrilling energy of being Team India. Of giving their all to see their country's name on a trophy. But Kabir Khan, once a captain, now forgotten, does. He knows what it takes to get there. And what it means to return empty handed. This time, he wants to make sure that it's different. He knows there are no second chances. Despite his past, he believes that if only the girls played as one, anything would be possible.
Because Kabir Khan believes that it is not that we can't win. It's just that we have never believed we can.
CHAK DE INDIA is the story of a coach's fight of making his team, Team India by overcoming their diverse backgrounds, by learning to use everything that life hurls on them as a secret weapon. It's a story about honesty, sincerity and integrity. The Film became a cult classic and won its leading man the National Award and put the Indian National Sport 'Hockey', back on the map.
